CALL @ CLIMATE WEEK

Emilio Martínez Poppe Kicks Off His Cloudbursts Project

Artist Emilio Martínez Poppe is creating a community-based artwork that explores how cloudbursts—sudden, intense rainstorms—affect everyday life in Corona, Queens. The project will take the form of a community newspaper that will include local residents who share their stories of flooding during storms.

The newspaper will be distributed free throughout Corona—in kiosks and as an insert in local papers. It will include:

  • Residents’ anonymous stories about flooding, recovery, and resilience

  • Practical resources and coupons for flood-related supplies such as sump pumps, furniture risers, flood bags, and shop vacuums

  • Community knowledge and advice gathered through neighborhood conversations and workshops

All stories will remain anonymous—no names will be printed. The goal is to create a collective portrait of Corona’s experiences with flooding. By combining storytelling and direct material support, this project reveals how art can help communities prepare for climate challenges while highlighting everyday creativity and care.

Stay tuned for more updates about Emilio's project!

Bronx-based artist Dennis RedMoon Darkeem hosted an art-making stand at the James Baldwin Outdoor Learning Center's Farmer's Market on Saturday, October 11th inviting community members of all ages to explore the bond between the present, past, and future of the natural environment that surrounds all of us.

Delving deeper into their connections with water, land, and community, participants sourced inspiration through storytelling and writing prompts before painting and decorating their stamp designs. Using a Tibbetts Brook activity workbook, Dennis then guided participants through creating a page for a collective community Zine.
