Tibbetts Estuary Tapestry FAQ

Q: What and where is Tibbetts Brook?

A: Tibbetts Brook enters the Bronx near through Van Cortlandt Park and is eventually routed underground and into the sewer. Click HERE to take Matthew López-Jensen’s virtual artist walk. You will learn everything you might want to know!

Q: What if I’ve never embroidered before?

A: Don’t worry! The project was designed for beginners and teaching the basics is part of the artists’ objective.

 Q: What if I make a mistake?

A: Stitches come out easily. But sometimes mistakes are beautiful. So don’t worry about it.

Q: How do I know where to stitch a garden or trees?

A: Every kit comes with a paper version of your tile. The paper version shows you what shapes are rooftops and where all the trees are that need to be stitched.

Q: Do I have to live in the Bronx or Northern Manhattan to participate?

A: No. However, we do have a significant number of spots reserved for those living in and around the community.

Q: Do I have to live in New York City?

A: No. Again, most spots are reserved for those living in and around the community, but we are excited to have a handful of contributors from around the country.

Q: What if I can’t finish my tile in time?

A: Send it back with what you have. We might offer it to another volunteer to continue or one of the artists might finish it themselves.

Q: What happens to my work (the linen tile) after I send it back?

A: It will be stitched together with all the other tiles to form the completed tapestry. The tapestry will be exhibited at Bronx venues and eventually it may be donated somewhere it can be preserved.

Q: Will my name appear anywhere?

A: Yes. We will include all participant names and neighborhoods in the final documentation. Or you can request to stay anonymous.

Q: Can I do more than one tile?

A: The central tapestry consists of 120 tiles and, for now, we only have one tile per participant. (We will expand the design if there is an abundance of interest). Probably not. However, if you have family members or roommates in your household they are welcome to join the fun. We can send multiple kits in a single box.
