Honoring the Ancestors: A Tibbetts Brook Tribute

  • James Baldwin Plaza 100 West Mosholu Parkway South NY, 10468 United States (map)

Join CALL Artist, Dennis RedMoon Darkeem, for an art-making session at the James Baldwin Outdoor Learn Center’s Farmer Market!

Featured as part of CALL’s Rescuing Tibbett’s initiative, Dennis will be hosting an art-making session to celebrate City of Water Day. Through this art-making stand, participants will be able to explore the local ecology through color and zine-making.

Tibbetts Brook is a historic freshwater stream that flows through the Bronx and Westchester County in New York. Once a vital waterway for the Lenape people, it served as a source of life, ceremony, and travel. The brook winds through Van Cortlandt Park, supporting diverse ecosystems of native plants, animals, and birds. Over time, parts of it were buried or diverted, but efforts are now underway to "daylight" and restore the brook, bringing it back above ground to heal the land and honor its past. It remains a symbol of resilience, natural memory, and Indigenous presence.

Dennis will guide us through writing and art-making prompts to create pages for a collective Zine honoring our ancestors, connections to water, and the history of Tibbetts Brook.

The Zine will be complete after 4 drop-in Zine-making sessions. The prompts and activities will differ at each session. The dates are below as follows:
